How to Compress Large Video Files up to 1GB
A large file does not need a long upload before it can be compressed. Slimvid reads and encodes the video on your device, so the practical limits are your browser memory, battery and available storage—not your connection speed.

Start with the limit you actually need to meet. A 25MB email attachment and a 100MB archive copy require very different bitrates. An exact-size target avoids repeated trial exports.
For files close to 1GB, close memory-heavy tabs and keep the device connected to power. The file stays local, but decoding and encoding still use RAM, CPU or the hardware video engine.
The three changes that save the most space
File size is mostly duration multiplied by bitrate. Reduce these in this order:
- Trim footage you do not need. Removing 20% of the duration removes roughly 20% of the data budget.
- Lower 4K footage to 1080p when the destination is a phone, chat app or presentation.
- Use a lower target bitrate only after duration and resolution match the viewing context.
When the browser is not the right tool
The web app accepts files up to 1GB. Very long 4K recordings, professional codecs and files above that limit are better handled by a native desktop encoder, which has fewer browser memory constraints.
Do not force a one-hour 4K recording into a tiny attachment. Split the useful section first or choose a larger delivery method; otherwise every encoder must discard visible detail.
