Compress Video for Discord
Discord’s File Attachments FAQ says the free upload limit without Nitro is 20MB (since August 2026; it was 10MB before). Nitro Basic is 50MB and Nitro is up to 1GB. Discord also says it is experimenting, so a few accounts may be allowed more. A one-minute clip near 20MB has about 2,700 kbps to spend. This page preselects 20MB and encodes on your device.
Hit the 20MB free-upload cap without guessing a bitrate. Hardware encoding, nothing uploaded.

Discord’s free cap is 20MB
Discord’s free upload limit is 20MB (since 13 August 2026; it was 10MB before). The help center, updated 30 September 2026, still states 20MB for people without Nitro, and says mobile now checks the original file size before compression.
Stay under that cap and Discord can keep the file as an attachment. A file the app rejects wastes a round trip. Guessing a bitrate in another editor usually overshoots, then you compress again.
Nitro Basic stays at 50MB. The same FAQ says Nitro offers up to 1GB. This page locks the free 20MB target. Encoding still runs on your device.

Discord’s FAQ also says it is experimenting with limits, and some people may upload more than 20MB. 20MB is the published free ceiling, not a promise for every account.

When 20MB is enough
Use the table below as a budget, not a guarantee. Short screen recordings and talking-head clips fit 20MB at a watchable picture. A five-minute 4K export does not, unless you trim it.
If you only need the older 8MB or 10MB ceiling for a school portal, use those pages. Discord’s free limit is 20MB (since August 2026; it was 10MB before).
What fits in 20 MB
Planning estimate from Slimvid’s size formula: 97% of the byte cap, a small audio reserve, then a lower resolution when the video bitrate would look bad. It is not a measured encode of one clip. Motion, codec and audio change the file.
| Duration | Total budget | Video bitrate | Picture the planner picks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 sec | 10347 kbps | 10219 kbps | 1080p |
| 30 sec | 5173 kbps | 5045 kbps | 1080p |
| 1 min | 2587 kbps | 2459 kbps | 720p |
| 2 min | 1293 kbps | 1165 kbps | 480p |
