Compress Video to 10MB

A 10MB file is still what many course portals and “attach a video” forms demand. It is no longer Discord’s free upload limit. Discord’s File Attachments FAQ says non-Nitro uploads are 20MB as of August 2026. This page treats 10MB as a hard cap: the encoder spends the duration’s bitrate budget and stays at or under 10MB. Short clips look fine. Long ones need a trim.

10MB is a form cap, not Discord’s free tier

People still search “compress video to 10MB” because a portal rejected their file. Hitting the number exactly is faster than exporting five times from a desktop editor.

If the destination is Discord, stop here and use the Discord page. The free ceiling there is 20MB. Sending 10MB works, but you are leaving half the allowance unused.

Email is usually 25MB on personal Gmail and Outlook.com. Use the email page for that. This page is the 10MB tool.

How the bitrate budget is calculated

The compressor takes 97% of 10MB, divides by the clip duration, and reserves a little for audio. What remains is the video bitrate. Under about 1,400 kbps of video it stops promising 720p. Under about 550 kbps it stops promising 480p.

That is why trimming helps more than a “higher quality” slider. You cannot invent bits the cap does not contain.

What fits in 10 MB

Planning estimate from Slimvid’s size formula: 97% of the byte cap, a small audio reserve, then a lower resolution when the video bitrate would look bad. It is not a measured encode of one clip. Motion, codec and audio change the file.

10MB video FAQ

Will the result actually be 10MB or less?
Yes. 10MB is a hard cap. If the hardware encoder cannot go that small, it retries once at a lower resolution. If it still misses, you get a clear failure instead of an oversized file.
Is Discord still 10MB?
No. Discord’s help center says the free limit is 20MB as of August 2026. Use this page for forms that still say 10MB, and the Discord page for Discord.
How long a video fits in 10MB?
See the table. Roughly, a short clip can stay at 720p or 1080p. Past a couple of minutes the planner steps the picture down because there are not enough bits per second.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Phones use the hardware encoder. Very long 4K clips may need a shorter range.
